Your pet has had the following 4 step dental procedure performed:
- Scaling removes the tartar above and below the gum line. This is done with hand instruments and ultrasonic cleaning equipment.
- Polishing smoothes the surface of the teeth, making them resistant to additional plaque formation.
- Flushing removes dislodged tartar from the teeth and helps to remove the bacteria that accompany tartar (this is the cause of the bad breath that usually accompanies dental disease).
- Fluoride coating decreases teeth sensitivity, strengthens enamel, and decreases the rate of future plaque formation.
Now that your pet has a clean and healthy smile, several preventive measures can be taken to help keep the teeth clean and breath fresh.
- Have your pet's teeth checked regularly, so problems that arise can be treated before they become too serious.
- Try to maintain home dental care with brushing the teeth (if your pet will allow). Special toothbrushes and flavored toothpastes are available to make it as easy and effective as possible. We will be happy to show you how to do this and help you select the appropriate product.
- A tartar control diet is available through our clinic. It can be used as a maintenance diet or a treat. It is very useful in prolonging the interval between dentals.
- Special enzyme treated chews are also available to keep tartar levels low.
